Ideas for our times
Article Abstract:
The ideas which had most influence in the 1980s all shared the same basis, having roots in 19th century economics. In contrast, the ideas which are dominating the 1990s are very diverse. Western values, such as equality and fraternity, are in decline, while Asian values, including strong competition and group loyalty, are gained wider acceptance. Key trends include a renewed confidence in science and the use of the past as a guide to the future.

A vacuum at the heart of Europe
Article Abstract:
Both pro- and anti-Europe campaigners are failing to gain much public support at present. The pro-Europeans are experiencing particular difficulties, with very limited enthusiasm for Europe as a political venture. Few Britons now believe that Europe is essential to the country's prosperity, and many see European institutions as too powerful. This mood is growing across Europe as a whole, robbing the continent of any firm political direction.
