Still life in the autumn
Article Abstract:
The hardy species cyclamen and arum come from countries where rain does not fall until the autumn. This means that they begin growing leaves in the autumn, rather than shedding them, as most other plants do in autumn. This growth of leaves can be very useful to gardeners, as it allows late winter annual weeds to be kept under control and adds colour to the garden at an otherwise rather bleak time of year. Cyclamen and arum will both grow under trees, but the arum will not flower unless it is planted in a sunny place in a warm garden.

Eloquence in a green shade
Article Abstract:
There are some basic principles in garden design, but people should feel free to adapt these to suit their own garden, according to garden designer Ryl Nowell. She demonstrates these principles to visitors to her garden at Wilderness Farm at Hadlow Down, East Sussex, England. This garden is modern and forward-looking, and makes careful use of screening to ensure that areas remain hidden. She avoids being restricted by conventional ideas of how a garden should look.
