Virago publishers celebrate its 20th birthday with a collage called 'Her Infinite Variety' read by famous actresses at Conway Hall, London, England. Virago's philosophy connects the world movement for women. It publishes previously unrecognised female writing, but sells mainly to women. Virago books are attractive and it is willing to keep things in print. It offers excellent marketing, editing and finance. It gives authors a sense of equality and good morale not available at big publishing houses.

The world's in their hands - but will they shape it?

Many young women are very eager to go out into the world and become independent, benefiting from changes in family and employment structures which have given women new opportunities. They are keen to avoid the mistakes made by their mothers, and want to realise their full potential. However, they are aware of the realities of life, with many of them already having had to deal with sexism and discrimination.
