God's own composer
Article Abstract:
Composer Arvo Part feels that it is important not to talk about a work while he is composing it, as this makes him lose the impulse to write it. He is a private man, but he also enjoys working closely with performers. He has distanced himself from his early music, regarding it as a child that has now become an adult. He does not regard the fact that he is Estonian as being particularly significant, as he does not identify his music with any particular country.

I was trying to find the courage not to play the clarinet
Article Abstract:
Composer Sir Harrison Birtwistle realized that he would never become a clarinettist when he heard clarinettist Alan Hacker play at the Royal Academy of Music in London, England, in 1957. This experience prompted him to sell his clarinets, and it came as a great relief to him that he could put behind him any thoughts of becoming a musician. He began to compose music again, and felt that he had finally found the right direction in his life.
