Straw halts release of IRA men

Article Abstract:

UK Home Secretary Jack Straw has obtained an interim order overruling the decision by the Northern Ireland Sentence Review Commission to permit the release of IRA prisoners under the terms of the Good Friday agreement. A hearing will now take place to decide whether the planned early release of four IRA prisoners will go ahead. Straw sought a review of the prisoners' early release on the basis that the commission had been misguided in assessing the sentences as if the prisoners had been jailed in Northern Ireland.
