Time is running out for a House of Lords that works
Article Abstract:
The UK government's plans for the House of Lords will leave it, at least in the short term, without the thin veil of legitimacy it previously had. The House of Lords will be replaced with an interim appointed chamber. The experience of other countries indicates that appointed second chambers lack credibility. All governments perform more effectively if they genuinely have to take account of the views of a second chamber, and steps should be taken to ensure that this happens in the UK.

The Lords shoot themselves in the foot
Article Abstract:
The UK House of Lords is intended to act as a forum for revising proposed legislation away from the heated political debate of the House of Commons. However, this does not always happen. In the case of the recent debate about gun control, for example, hereditary peers allowed their privileged backgrounds to cloud their judgement. This debate served to indicate that many hereditary peers are seriously out of touch with the concerns of ordinary people.

It may be too late to bring democracy to the Lords
Article Abstract:
The UK government seems determined to alter the House of Lords as little as possible. Politicians appear to be the only people to fail to recognize that there is no justification for retaining a second chamber in a modern democracy.
