Suharto to sail back to power in Indonesia poll
Article Abstract:
President Suharto of Indonesia will be 72 in Mar 1993 when the People's Representative Council (MPR) of 500 House of Representatives members and 500 appointees elect the president for 1993-1998. President Suharto may continue after 1993 but step down and appoint his own successor. Guruh Sukarno Putra, son of the President is a possible candidate for the 1993 election. Criticism of the President's family monopolies in business may demonstrate a desire for change. The army would prefer General Try Sutrisno or Rudini to be appointed vice-president.

Chinese red tape ties up delegates at home
Article Abstract:
Only 25,000 delegates are now expected to attend the international women's forum for non-governmental organisations (NGOs), which will open shortly near Peking, China, although 36,000 registered to attend earlier in 1995. This is because Chinese political difficulties and bureaucratic hold-ups have prevented many potential delegates from obtaining visas. Some observers believe that the Chinese government has been deliberately attempting to reduce the number of delegates and to isolate the conference.

Suharto aims to woo Islamic moderates
Article Abstract:
Secular Indonesia is experiencing religious revival as 90% of its 180 million people claim they are Muslim. President Suharto has been increasing his Muslim life, attending Islamic festivals, supporting mosque building, funding the first Islamic bank and relaxing schoolgirls' dress rules. Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the nation's largest Muslim organisation, led by Abdurrahman Wahid, supports Suharto passively. Mr Wahid helped found the Forum for Democracy, a liberal pro-democracy group.
