Sultan's dream restored to faithful
Article Abstract:
Syria has restored seven of its 17 German and Swiss 19th century steam locomotives over the last two years, and these are now fully operational. It has also brought four of its five Romanian diesels back into working order, along with two of its six Hungarian railcars. Efforts are now being made by 600 railwaymen to restore parts of the Hijaz railway from Damascus which were destroyed in the Arab Revolt in the early part of the 20th century. The line from Deraa to Bosra, from Damascus to Qatana and to Bloudan has now been restored.

Muslim leader warns of a new assault on US forces
Article Abstract:
Large numbers of Pakistanis are now in favour of a holy war against US troops in the Gulf, according to billionaire Saudi dissident Ossama Bin Laden. He is seen by the US as the Muslim fundamentalist who poses the most serious threat to the west. He is calling for the US to be expelled from the Gulf, and claims that he has even gained support from some members of the Saudi royal family. He has previously made threats against UK and French troops in the Gulf, but now claims that these armies have only a symbolic presence there.

Challenging the might of the sound-bite
Article Abstract:
Print journalism is assuming a new role in response to possibly sanitized live television reporting. Satellite links, such as the Cable News Network (CNN), can bring instant news of world events. But television news accounts can easily be manipulated by governments for political reasons, as in the case of the Persian Gulf War, or by editors for reasons of taste. Newspaper reports, however, can bring uncensored and considered accounts which then become useful archive material.
