Steel reaches breaking point
Article Abstract:
Western German steel production dropped by 22% in Jan 1993. Thyssen Stahl's net losses for 1992 were 354 million Deutcshmark. Krupp and Hoesch also made huge losses and announced closure of a blast furnace in Feb 1993. At least another 15,000 jobs are expected to go in the industry by the end of 1994. EC steel envoy Fernand Braun expects cuts of up to 17 million tonnes of crude steel but is considering aid.
