Tailor-made to suit debtors
Article Abstract:
The recession has led to some legal firms becoming bankrupt, but some with financial problems can retain their practising certificates by agreeing to an individual voluntary arrangement (IVA.) This involves partial repayments of debts between 20,000 pounds sterling and 500,000 pounds sterling for three to five years. A minimum of 75% of the solicitor's creditors must approve the IVA. The Solicitors Complaints' Bureau may veto an IVA. It usually requires regular progress reports, and sole practitioners to find a partner.

Tailor-made to suit needs of investors
Article Abstract:
London stock markets are offering split capital trusts to meet current investment needs. The trusts can be of 5 different types: zero dividend; preference shares; stepped performance; income shares; capital shares and warrants. Early share swings offer a different level of risk and tax incentives for investments. Split capital trusts shares should be bought through a broker unless the purchaser is fully conversant with the terminology.

You can't rush the repo man
Article Abstract:
Buying repossessed properties is complicated because there are two 'owners' to deal with: the building society conducts the sale but the owner still legally owns the property. These two parties may not communicate well and information can be hard to obtain. The Court of Appeal ruled in Jul 1992 that building societies must sell quickly, even if the resale fails to cover the outstanding mortgage.
