Take a hundred players, mix well
Article Abstract:
In 1943 the director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Serge Koussevitzky, commissioned Bela Bartok to write a new work in memory of his wife and the resulting Concerto for Orchestra has become the best-loved of this genre. Bartok was dying of leukaemia but completed this 40-minute, five-movement composition for full orchestra in two months. It is thought he did not acknowledge it as a symphony because it lacked decorum but it was the longest of his mature works. Since then the Concerto for Orchestra has developed considerably, works by Elliott Carter, Thea Musgrave and Richard Rodney Bennett being particularly well known.

How did he do it?
Article Abstract:
1997 sees the 200th anniversary of the birth of Franz Schubert. Unlike Mozart, he did not begin composing until he was a teenager, but by the age of 20 had produced a considerable number of pieces, including symphonies and more than 150 songs. His creative career lasted for only 18 years, but produced 998 works. However, it has taken many years for Schubert to be truly appreciated, and there are still ways in which his work is not as highly valued as that of other composers.
