Flying by the seat of his pants
Article Abstract:
Virgin Atlantic claims that the 265,000 pounds sterling which it has recently accepted from British Airways to settle a High Court action over a campaign by British Airways staff against Virgin is a victory. However, British Airways is also claiming victory, stating that it will actually receive money from Virgin under the settlement terms, net of costs. Both companies are trying to use the case to gain marketing advantage, although they have very different commercial backgrounds.

High speed on a floating magnet
Article Abstract:
The Transrapid German hi-tech train can reach 238 mph (382 kph) in less than three minutes. It is based on a linear motor. It is raised from the track by magnetic attraction from above. The electric current is turned off 100,000 times per second to prevent clamping, so less power is needed to keep it up. It performs like a sports car so frequent stops are economical. It can climb and turn easily. Tracks can be built cheaply but maintenance may be expensive in the future.
