Easy pickings from the carousel
Article Abstract:
In one year Geoffrey Senior stole property worth 350,000 pounds sterling from the luggage carousels at Heathrow Airport, UK. Senior, 21, posed as a businessman and removed luggage which he rifled in the toilets at the airport. His first offence provided 7,000 pounds sterling in cash in an envelope and this motivated him to continue. Video cameras are present in the carousel areas but they proved ineffective in stopping him. He was eventually apprehended by uniformed policemen who remembered seeing him earlier and became suspicious as a result. He was sentenced to three years imprisonment.

The valley of the shadow of tread
Article Abstract:
The fire at the tyre dump at Heyop Valley mid-Wales started in Oct 1989 and is still burning. It is the world's worst tyre-dump fire. The dump belongs to Motorway Remoulds. There are about 10 million tyres. The fire is contained by a grout wall of injected fly-ash and earth. The fire could take 10 years to burn. Environmentalists fear that local water is polluted by phenol and hydrocarbons. High levels of zinc threatens fish and birds. Residents are criticising the local authority for failing to provide health checks.

The farmer's in his hobby den
Article Abstract:
Full time farmers are uneasy at the number of incoming part time farmers who neglect the land. In Thursden Valley, Lancashire, the resentment is high because local people cannot afford smallholdings and high prices tempt farmers to sell up and move to cheaper areas. Those who then take up the vacant farms often have full time desk jobs and do not have the knowledge and time to tend the land or livestock properly. New grants for low intensity, environmentally sensitive farming also attract hobbyists.
