Miners rage against extinction
Article Abstract:
The Russian coal industry is undergoing significant changes, with 106 out of 250 pits being closed and almost 400,000 jobs having been shed since 1994. This is causing great hardship for communities that have traditionally relied heavily on the coal industry for employment. Miners have protested strongly, but the government has taken no practical steps to help them. There is little prospect of them finding alternative employment, and there are reports that some have committed suicide.

Russia lays age of blood to rest
Article Abstract:
The reburial of the Romanovs in the 18th-century St Peter and St Paul Cathedral in St Petersburg, Russia, avoided being a farce as a result of the last-minute decision by Russian President Boris Yeltsin to attend the ceremony. The event represents a clear expression of remorse for an episode regarded as an act of heroism during the Soviet era. Yeltsin has expressed the view that the Romanovs' murder was a horrendous crime and that their reburial is a symbol of Russian unification.
