Taking on the master, getting in the mood
Article Abstract:
Jazz pianist Fred Hersch does not feel that his career has been negatively affected by his decision to make it known that he is gay and HIV-positive. Indeed, he feels very well and has been busier than ever. His latest venture is an album of tunes by pianist and composer Thelonious Monk, 'Thelonious - Fred Hersch Plays Monk.' This is the third in his series of CDs for Nonesuch Records in which he focuses on the works of a particular composer. Hersch found it challenging to be faithful to the spirit of Monk without trying to directly emulate him.
