Taking the plunge
Article Abstract:
It can take a great deal of work to reach the level of uniqueness in a performance which audiences have the right to expect, according to pianist Imogen Cooper. She no longer regrets not having a contract with a leading record label, as she feels that this gives her the flexibility and time she needs to produce her best performances. She is particularly respected for her interpretations of Schubert, Schumann and Mozart, but she actually has a much wider knowledge of piano music, especially that of the 20th century. She is chief Artist in Residence at the 1997 Bath Festival.

Sketches of Spain
Article Abstract:
'Atlandida', a three part suite by Manuel de Falla, the Spanish composer who was born in 1876 and died in 1946 in Argentina, will have its London premiere at the Albert Hall at the first night of the Promenade concerts on July 28 1996. The work was incomplete when he died, but was finished by Ernesto Halffter, an ex-pupil and friend. Falla, whose birthplace was Cadiz, studied with the composer, Felipe Pedrell, in Madrid, Spain. He spent seven years in Paris, before moving to Granada, where in 1919 he became famous for 'The Three-Cornered Hat'.

Long day's journey into night
Article Abstract:
The staging of Schubert's 'Winterreise' by artist Christian Boltanski and film-maker Hans-Peter Cloos has attracted mixed views since it was first seen in early 1994. Some observers have dismissed the staging as self-indulgent and extremely disrespectful of the original work. However, this song-cycle goes far beyond song recitals which were common in Schubert's day, and requires particular treatment. The staging must deal with the conjuring of dream landscapes, and therefore needs no sense of everyday existence.
