Romancing the past
Article Abstract:
The 60th anniversary of the Spanish Civil War is making people question if such a war could happen again. According to 86-year-old Bill Alexander, who participated, a war like that could not be repeated in the 1990s because warfare is different, with fewer people handling complex weapons and because there has been a change in mentality. According to the writer of 'The Spanish Civil War 1936:39', Paul Preston, it was fascism which inspired the people to respond, and the situation in the 1990s is very different.

A brew to get bothered about?
Article Abstract:
The Labour party has called on advertising authorities and the Office of Fair Trading to undertake an investigation into the growing number of alcoholic 'soft' drinks now being sold in the UK. It fears that such products will encourage teenagers who are accustomed to drinking soft drinks such as cola and lemonade to turn to the alcoholic versions instead. However, by highlighting these products as potentially harmful, teenagers may actually be more encouraged to try them than they would otherwise have been.

Belfast boy
Article Abstract:
Robert McLiam Wilson is an author whose first novel, Ripley Bogle, was given four awards. He is from Belfast and went to study at Cambridge University, leaving his university career to write. He sees Belfast as provincial in relation to both Dublin, Ireland, and London, England, but sees positive aspects to being provincial. Belfast is also place where high comedy is fostered, McLiam Wilson argues. Eureka Street is the name of his most recent novel which is a portrayal of modern Ireland.
