Taught in the USA
Article Abstract:
The US further education system is becoming increasingly highly respected in the UK. University campuses offer a vast range of facilities and are well funded, while community colleges operate on a local basis and are an integral part of the further education system. It is relatively inexpensive for students to obtain an associate degree at a community college, with courses being either vocational or academic. Students can then go directly into employment or move to a university to undertake the final two years of a bachelor's degree.

Article Abstract:
The higher education system in London, England, is currently extremely fragmented. There are 58 institutions with 220,000 full-time and 110,000 part-time students, and there is little collaboration between them. The University of London and its constituent colleges are extremely unwilling to see themselves as part of the city, and no attention is given to how higher education could boost the city's economy. In other parts of the UK, universities are playing an active role in promoting regional economic regeneration.

Goodbye, alma mater?
Article Abstract:
Rapid changes are currently taking place in higher education in the UK, and these are allowing a growing number of people to gain access to higher education. The latest trend is the creation by large companies of virtual universities which allow them to boost their competitiveness and meet staff demands for further training. Some observers feel that such developments will bring an end to the university as it has traditionally operated.
