Ten reasons why Blair can't afford to relax
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour party is currently a long way ahead of the Conservative party in the opinion polls. However, party leader Tony Blair is keenly aware that it is vital to avoid complacency. The party's policies are under close scrutiny because it is widely assumed that it will win the forthcoming general election, and television debates may work to the advantage of the Conservative party. The strength of the economy may benefit the Conservative party, and there is a possibility of negative media coverage of the Labour party before the general election.

Blair battles for Labour's soul
Article Abstract:
Labour party leader Tony Blair believes that the current debates about changes to the party's constitution should be a matter which is discussed openly with the general public, in order to ensure that the party's beliefs are in line with what it says to gain public support. He is working hard to demolish the model of the party as a secret society, hoping that this will make it more approachable for ordinary people. Party members report that this approach has had a positive effect on its regional meetings, making them examine their core beliefs.

Blair scores a hit as prime minister in waiting
Article Abstract:
UK Labour party leader Tony Blair made an extremely impressive speech at the party's 1996 conference. He succeeded in addressing the concerns both of the immediate party and of the electorate as a whole. He largely managed to overcome concerns about what he would do if he became prime minister, and was able to convey to the party that he would be a much more radical prime minister than his current approach indicates. He was careful to acknowledge the trust of party members, but did not make any concessions to them.
