The 38 steps
Article Abstract:
The founder of the Hollywood Film Institute, Dov S-S Simens, runs a lecture circuit on low and ultra-low budget movie making and claims to cram four years of film school into a two day course. He insists there is too much mystery made of making films, and really it is as basic as buying unexposed film and pointing it at people. He relates the steps in producing a film to the 38 cheques that will need to be written. These run from number 1 for the producer's fee, number 2 for the script to number 37 for the negative cutter and number 38 for the release print.

The nominations for Best Pitcher are...
Article Abstract:
The New Producers' Alliance held a workshop entitled 'Pitcher Perfect - How To Pitch Your Movie Idea' on Mar 18, 1998. This included contributions from Allon Reich, head of film at HAL Films, executive producer Nik Powell and Pilgrim Films producer Richard Johns. They emphasized that passion, entertainment and brevity are the key elements in making a successful pitch. In some cases, an innovative approach will be effective. Producer David Permut, for example, has become well known for sending out video pitches.

Is this Hollywood's worst nightmare?
Article Abstract:
Digital video technology is bringing significant benefits to independent filmmakers. Some observers believe that filmmakers will eventually be self-sufficient, rather than having to rely on financiers. The advantages of digital video technology have already been demonstrated by 'The Blair Witch Project,' which cost only $50,000 to make but has already taken in $150 million at the box office.
