The CIA's bungle in Baghdad
Article Abstract:
The Central Intelligence Agency's (CIA) plans to instigate a military coup against Iraqi President Saddam Hussein were foiled in Jun 1996 because Iraqi security forces had extensive knowledge in advance of the CIA's plans. They arrested large numbers of Iraqi army officers and took very firm action to stamp out any possibility of rebellion. By Sep 1996, some 300 Iraqis had died as a direct result of the failure of the CIA's plans. It is possible that the successful action against the CIA gave Saddam Hussein the confidence to send troops into Iraqi Kurdistan in Sep 1996.

Sanctions reduce Baghdad to ruins
Article Abstract:
Sanctions have had an extremely negative effect on Iraq since 1990. It has not been possible to construct new power stations or water or sewage plants, for example, and existing plants are becoming increasingly obsolete because no spare parts are available. Hospitals are unable to run basic equipment, and many people are receiving insufficient nutrition, leading to conditions such as calcium deficiency. Many rivers are contaminated, but ordinary people have no choice but to drink the water.

Clinton backed Baghdad bombers
Article Abstract:
Video evidence has been produced to indicate that the US has secretly given extensive support to Iraqi National Accord, a resistance group which uses car bombs and smaller explosive devices in its campaign to destabilise president Saddam Hussein. This disclosure is particularly politically sensitive at a time when the US has been criticising Hamas suicide bombings in Israel.
