Preparations for the possible impact of the year 2000 computer date change problem are boosting the world economy. There has already been a rise in computer-related investment, and demand is likely to rise as physical goods are stockpiled in anticipation of disruption to production chains in early 2000. It is likely that economic growth will slow down in 2000, even if the actual damage from the year 2000 computer date change proves to be towards the bottom of the anticipated range.

Care must be taken to prevent taxation driving business abroad, and effective pro-competition policies should be implemented. Emphasizing education will reduce divisions in society and make a country more able to obtain a large share of global electronic commerce activity.
