The Japanese way of debt
Article Abstract:
In Japan bankruptcies incresed in 1992 by 32%, 14,167 firms failing during the year due to the economy slowing down and banks being less reluctant to call in the receivers. When International Publishing and Education Corporation (IPEC) had the receivers called in it was discovered that the firm had been trading insolvently for six years and was involved in dishonest deals. The book keeping was fraudulent and yakuza gangsters were deeply involved. The banks had lent money with little caution in the 80's mainly for property deals which had no chance of being profitable.

Lonely crusade to bring down the Rising Sun
Article Abstract:
Mr Shoichi Chibana is on trial for burning the Rising Sun flag, which has no legal status as the national Japanese flag, at the national athletics meeting held in 1987, to commemorate Okinawans who killed themselves in a cave when the American troops arrived in the island. During the Second World War the militarist government used the Rising Sun flag but it was not declared the national flag in the post-war constitution. It is unusual for the Japanese to demonstrate against authority and Mr Chibana's life has been threatened.

Time to tame an economic animal
Article Abstract:
Japan's increasing economic power is not matched by an increasing role in international affairs. The end of the Cold War and the reduced dominance of the US has also forced Japan to superpower level but the government seems unable to take a stand on international issues until a safe diplomatic line has emerged. Prime Minister Kiichi Miyazawa is looking to increase Japan's role in world affairs but he is blocked by turmoil within his own political party.
