The Rev Professor Jack Plumley
Article Abstract:
Priest and Egyptologist Jack Plumley showed a great ability for ancient languages from an early age. He went to St John's College, Durham, England, in 1929 to read Theology Honours (for Holy Orders). He was ordained in 1933 in St Paul's Cathedral, and then had a succession of curacies and livings in London, England. He attended classes in Egyptology at University College London, and developed an interest in Coptic. His 'Introductory Coptic Grammar' was published in 1948. He was Associate Lecturer in Coptic at Cambridge University, England, between 1949 and 1957 and Herbert Thompson Professor of Egyptology between 1957 and 1977.

Canon Rupert Lonsdale
Article Abstract:
Naval officer and priest Rupert Lonsdale joined the Royal Navy in 1919. He entered the submarine branch in 1927, and in 1934 passed the submarine command qualifying course. He became increasingly attracted to Christianity during his time as a prisoner of war in the second world war, and became a priest in 1949. He was vicar of Morden-with-Almer, England, from 1951 to 1953, and then spent five years in the White Highlands of Kenya as a District Chaplain.
