The Times: cheap and fearful
Article Abstract:
The Times newspaper saw sales fall by 5% in the second half of 1998 from the year-earlier period. The decline in sales seems to be accelerating, and this makes it uncertain whether the newspaper will fulfill owner Rupert Murdoch's great ambition of overtaking The Telegraph, its main rival. Recent circulation figures also indicate that there are difficulties associated with reducing the price of The Times. This certainly served to boost sales temporarily, but has not produced a long-term increase in circulation.

A newspaper is no ordinary business, it is a trophy asset
Article Abstract:
The Independent newspaper will continue to express independent views, even though it now has a single owner, Independent Newspapers. The purchase by Independent Newspapers, which is the largest publisher of broadsheet newspapers in the world, will bring stability and resources. This will be warmly welcomed by the Independent's staff, who have worked extremely hard to keep the newspaper going in the face of very fierce competition.
