The Turkish question
Article Abstract:
The European Union (EU) should treat Turkey as a partner and friend?? and try to understand the situation in Turkey, rather than just criticise the country for its treatment of prisoners. A hunger strike amongst Turkish prisoners, which led to twelve deaths and eighteen inmates becoming gravely ill, resulted in condemnation of the authorities by most EU member states, but the situation was coloured by the media. The UK did not criticise the Turkish authorities, mindful of a parliamentary vote in Turkey on the extension of Operation Provide Comfort. Turkey is too significant for human rights to be the overriding factor in foreign relations.

Kosovo set to ignite new Balkan war
Article Abstract:
Kosovo, a region in former Yugoslavia which is mainly inhabited by Albanians, has for some time been regarded as particularly sensitive. It is now likely that there will be open conflict in this region following a number of attacks on Serb police targets there recently. This could in turn spark off international violence involving Macedonia and Albania, which may also have repercussions for Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria.
