Article Abstract:
There are significant challenges to address as decisions are made about whether Afghanistan's opposition Northern Alliance should seek to build on its victory in Mazar-i-Sharif, Afghanistan, by attempting to force the Taliban to abandon Kabul, Afghanistan. Questions must be raised about whether military victories of this kind actually help in efforts to capture Osama bin Laden.

America may find itself stuck with a long-term role in Afghanistan
Article Abstract:
The US has made it clear that it does not regard peace-keeping as a useful role for its troops in Afghanistan. However, it may prove impossible to avoid this. It will be necessary to have a unified army if a government with real authority is to be implemented. If this does not happen, then a peace-keeping force will be required.
