UK: MANCHESTER AIRPORT'S NEW RUNWAY OPENED
Article Abstract:
Manchester Airport's new GB[pound] 172mn runway was opened on 11 December 2000 and is regarded as essential to plans to make the airport the second busiest in the UK, behind Heathrow. The airport aims to increase the number of passengers handled to 40.7mn by 2015, compared with 18.5mn at present, raising revenues to over GB[pound] 4bn from GB[pound] 1.7bn per year. It is projected that over the coming 20 years, demand for air travel at airports in the UK will rise by 4.3% per year on average, with a 150% rise in total traffic envisaged.

The airport inquiry coming in to land has produced 21m words and 19 babies
Article Abstract:
It was initially anticipated that the planning inquiry into the proposed fifth terminal for Heathrow Airport, England, would last no more than 16 months. In fact, the inquiry has run for four years, and has produced 80,000 separate documents. The team from the British Airports Authority working on the inquiry is very pleased that the process is now coming to an end. Many observers feel that the inquiry, which has produced 80 million pounds sterling in costs, has been a waste of money.

Terminal turbulence
Article Abstract:
The inquiry into plans by the British Airports Authority (BAA) to construct a fifth terminal at Heathrow Airport, England, which began on May 16, 1995, has now come to an end. It has become clear during the course of the inquiry that people living near the airport are mainly against its expansion, but they lack the financial resources to fight BAA. It has been possible for BAA to employ top barristers to argue its case, while opponents of a fifth terminal have had to severely restrict their legal costs. Even if the opponents do eventually win, it is possible that the government will still allow BAA to go ahead.
