The awkward squad at prayer
Article Abstract:
Anglican, Muslim and Catholic religious leaders in the UK have suddenly become involved in political developments. Some have spoken out against the Conservative government, while others have advised followers on how to vote in the forthcoming general election. This contrasts strongly with the 1980s, when religious leaders bowed to the strong will of prime minister Margaret Thatcher. The recent involvement of the Church in politics seems to result from a growing need among ordinary people for a shift towards greater morality and justice.

Mrs Jones has something to say
Article Abstract:
Most poor people in the UK do not realise that they have choices, according to Maria Jones, who has herself experienced extreme poverty and now campaigns on behalf of the poor. She works with ADT Fourth World, which aims to improve the self-confidence of the poor, rather than focusing on physical or financial assistance. She emphasises the importance of treating the poor as complete human beings, and points out that even social workers often fail to do this.
