Trouble in paradise
Article Abstract:
The problems facing the ordinary residents of Jamaica have attracted very little international attention. The country is too rich to quality for International Monetary Fund debt relief, but UNICEF estimates that around one-third of its population of 2.6 million live in total poverty. There are also problems with disease, especially HIV infection. The incidence of reported HIV infection on Jamaica is now doubling every two years, and it is common for people to fail to seek medical help until the infection has reached an advanced stage. Jamaica is also suffering from high levels of violent crime.

Everyone's gone to the wall
Article Abstract:
The Great Wall of China is a particularly popular place to visit on Oct 1, China's national holiday. The parts of the Great Wall closest to the coach park can be very crowded, but it is possible to avoid the crowds by climbing on further. The wall has been extensively restored, but is in fact most impressive in parts where it is crumbling. Visitors who wish to avoid the crowds and the serious traffic problems they create should consider travelling to China in winter.

Ice rescue turns into tragedy
Article Abstract:
Three people may be dead following an incident at a frozen lake in Kinsley, England. An 11-year-old girl fell through the ice after chasing a dog onto the lake, and a 51-year-old bystander also fell into the freezing water when he attempted to rescue her. The third victim was an off-duty firefighter who also made a rescue attempt. Medical teams are now attempting to warm the bodies of the three victims, but they are not expected to have survived.
