The ballad of Billie-Jo
Article Abstract:
Billie-Jo Jenkins, who was murdered on Feb 15, 1997, at the age of 13, had been fostered by school teacher Sion Jenkins, who was not a relative, and his wife Lois, at the age of nine. It appeared that being fostered brought a significant improvement to her life, which before that time had been chaotic because of the behaviour of her parents. She seemed happy, and was performing well at school. However, the trial of Sion Jenkins for her murder has revealed that he had a very controlling personality and was sometimes violent. The case has revealed the extent to which society in the UK believes in apparent middle class respectability.

There was nothing on my list about this...
Article Abstract:
Experiences of coming to terms with having a baby daughter with cerebral palsy are described. The lack of development that first raised suspicions about the child's condition is discussed, and emotions prompted by the firm diagnosis are considered. The difficult transition from a well-ordered life full of goals and certainties to a life of uncertainty and exclusion is described. The liberating effect of a disability is also considered.
