The battle of the bucket shops
Article Abstract:
It has now become extremely common for airlines to sell cheap tickets through licensed discount agents. A recent development in this area is the decision by British Airways to compete directly with discount agents by running press advertisements in the name of Travel Options, a subsidiary company. Discount agents are concerned by this decision, pointing out that they can only compete with British Airways by making no profit at all, as Travel Options is selling to the public at the same fares as British Airways is selling to them. The use of unbranded agents by airlines will destroy the position of discount agents as being cheaper than airlines.

Will your booking earn the travel agent a free TV?
Article Abstract:
Almost all travel agents in the UK have connections with particular suppliers, such as tour operators and airlines, through which they can earn extra commission. It is particularly common for car rental companies to offer incentives to travel agents. Hire for Lower, for example,is offering travel agents a free Sony colour television for five faxed bookings in Jul 1999. Airlines use incentives to encourage travel agents to sell seats on flights that are hard to fill.
