The battle not to be left behind
Article Abstract:
The French Socialists and United Kingdom Labor party are competing to lead the center-left in Europe. Their policies are different, but there are major differences between the two countries. Tony Blair, UK prime minister, follows the Thatcherite revolution and governs an economy with low unemployment. He sees wealth creation as the role for individuals, while in France the state is also seen as a wealth creator. The French prime minister, Lionel Jospin, governs a country with high unemployment and the role of the state has increased in France in the two decades to 1997.

French right falling apart over EU poll
Article Abstract:
The French National Front is in danger of breaking apart as a result of conflict between President Jean-Marie Le Pen and Bruno Megret, who in practice is the second-most powerful figure in the party. The two men are in dispute over who should lead the party's list at the European elections. Megret presents himself as more moderate than Le Pen, but it is reported that he is privately even more extreme than Le Pen in his racial and nationalist views.
