Article Abstract:

There are many traces of socialism in the project of European economic and monetary union (EMU). However, it has become increasingly clear that there are significant differences between the Left's concept of EMU and the plan drawn up by governments with mainly right-wing tendencies at Maastricht, Netherlands. Great efforts will be made in the period immediately after the implementation of EMU to convince ordinary people that it is working, and Eurosceptics will initially be discredited. However, EMU will be a failure in the longer term as it can only work if there are Thatcherite governments in all participating countries.

Article Abstract:

The UK Labour party should have been willing to join the single European currency from the beginning, even though this would have made it necessary to raise taxes. Increased taxes would have been balanced out by a decline in interest rates. No modern economy can survive outside a large trading block, and the UK will soon have to make a choice between Europe and Nafta. It would be much better for the UK to join Europe, where it would be an equal partner with Germany and France, than to join Nafta, where it would be dominated by the US.
