The big gamble that has brought riches beyond all expectations
Article Abstract:
There are still mixed views in the UK about the National Lottery. However, it is impossible to dispute the fact that the National Lottery, through the Heritage Lottery Fund, has been able to support a wide range of heritage causes. So far, heritage projects across the UK have received almost 1 billion pounds sterling. Applications for funding still greatly exceed the Heritage Lottery Fund's share of income from the National Lottery. New legislation has extended the assistance the fund can give, but its budget has effectively been reduced.

Smack City tries to kick the habit
Article Abstract:
The death of a 13-year-old boy from a heroin overdose prompted residents of the Cranhill estate on the outskirts of Glasgow, Scotland, to take action against drug dealing, which had become rife on the estate. The Mothers Against Drugs group has seen considerable success in encouraging people to report drug dealers to the police, and around 230 people were charged with drug-related offences in the first five months of 1998. The action group is also calling for prevention services in schools and a crisis centre.

British creatures fight for survival in rivers and meadows as aliens stage invasion of the wild
Article Abstract:
It has become increasingly common over recent years for animal species from abroad to establish a strong presence in the UK. Most recently, many large specimens of the Chinese mitten crab have been found in the Thames. Many observers are becoming very concerned about the possible impact of these alien species on native wildlife in the UK. A study is now being undertaken to assess how far the Chinese mitten crab has spread along the banks of the Thames.
