The fruit trade that turned sour
Article Abstract:
The banana industry on the tiny Caribbean island of St Vincent is in crisis. This is the result of the US winning a ruling in 1997 from the World Trade Organisation that the preferential trading arrangements on which Caribbean banana exports to Europe were based for many years were illegal. The European Union is now seeking to reach a compromise agreement. If it cannot, then the banana traders of St Vincent face the loss of their livelihood. There is a growing fear that unemployed young people on the island will turn to drugs.
