The birds, the bees, and a few four-letter words
Article Abstract:
Brook contraception advice service initiated a voluntary project in peer education to offer sex education to school children in Edinburgh. Jean Malcolm, the director of the Edinburgh branch of Brook, tried to establish this service through the Lothian Region education authority in the 70's but it took 20 years for them to try it. She feels that young people learn about sex from each other, but not necessarily the true facts, so young volunteers are trained to nurture people of their own age in youth clubs and schools.

When death comes out of the dark
Article Abstract:
The voluntary bereavement counselling organisation, Cruse, sent counsellors into five Edinburgh schools to talk to children about death. They met 179 10-11-year-olds, half of whom had lost a relative or friend. Most had not been able to discuss their loss with an adult. Children understand that talking about their feelings is helpful. Bereavement education should only be undertaken by a trained counsellor, who may be the class teacher, with small groups.

'Why not get started, and just try it and see?' (school tests in Scotland)
Article Abstract:
Juniper Green Primary School, Edinburgh, Scotland, attempted the revised national math tests in 1993. They took under half an hour. Professionally printed booklets had cartoons and questions on a space theme. Individual teachers choose when their pupils take the tests in math and languages as they reach varying attainment levels. They base the decision on how much work the child has done. Parents are given confidential results. There are few objectors.
