The bitter taste of Vichy
Article Abstract:
The experience of the near past is very attractive, according to novelist Sebastian Faulks. He believes that this is why he was drawn to France as a location for his novels 'Birdsong,' The Girl at the Lion d'Or' and 'Charlotte Gray,' with France offering him imaginative access to the past. He favours the idea that everyone's life is a complete story. He is very keen to express in words the horror of the second world war, which many people found totally uncommunicable.

To hell and back among desperate men
Article Abstract:
Novelist Robert Stone feels that he is in conflict because he wants to be part of everybody's life but also wants to be free. He believes that novelists have to take their work from their own life, but also points out that desperation is universal and that powerful novels can emerge from apparently very ordinary situations. He undertook extensive research for his latest novel, 'Damascus Gate,' and now plans a book set in the wilds of Alaska.
