The bloodstained soil of Ireland yields first of 'the disappeared'
Article Abstract:
Bodies have been recovered of people killed by the Irish Republican Army (IRA) in the 1970s and 1980s. Legislation has been passed that protects the IRA, and the corpses have started to appear. There have been campaigns by the relatives of the victims, who have been unable to grieve properly without the corpses of their loved ones. Post-mortems are to be carried out, but new scientific evidence will not be used to prosecute those responsible for the killings.

3.10pm: Omagh in silent grief for its dead
Article Abstract:
A ceremony has been held in Omagh, Northern Ireland, to mark the first anniversary of the bomb attack by the Real IRA in which 29 people died and more than 200 were injured. The ceremony attracted large numbers of people, some of whom had not visited the scene since the bomb attack took place. Strong emphasis was placed on the need to fill the political vacuum created by the failure of talks in early Jul 1999.

Finucane murder suspect shot dead by loyalist gang
Article Abstract:
A loyalist death squad has assassinated William Stobie. He had admitted to being an RUC Special Branch informer, but there are probably more complex reasons for his death. It is possible that Stobie was involved in the murder of solicitor Pat Finucane in Feb 1989.
