The deepest divide in America
Article Abstract:
Pro-choice campaigners in America who defend abortion rights held a rally on Washington's Mall in April 1992 which attracted half a million people. Pro-life groups campaign against abortion. The issue bisects America and could affect the presidential campaign. The US Supreme Court commences hearings on Apr 22 1992 into a state of Pennsylvania law passed in 1991 which challenges the guaranteed abortion rights of 1973 in 'Roe versus Wade'. Louisiana and Utah have enacted bans on abortion; Pennsylvania imposes a 24-hour wait on women seeking abortions. The pro-choice organisation Planned Parenthood resigned itself to 'Roe versus Wade' being overridden so attempted to rouse public support.

America's welfare revolution leaves an army of single mothers confused
Article Abstract:
The US government is working towards the abolition of the Aid to Families with Dependent Children programme, which has been operating since the 1930s. Under new welfare legislation, guaranteed aid for single mothers will be abandoned, and states will be required to attach job conditions and time limits to assistance. Many states have been implementing welfare reforms for some time already, and this has prompted a significant decline in the number of people claiming benefits. In Wisconsin, for example, a welfare regime stricter than that envisaged by the US government will take effect in Sep 1997.

Action stations as America recalls grand design
Article Abstract:
The US is renovating railway stations, which were allowed to deteriorate as it became more fashionable to travel by car. The renovations, which include building restaurants and shopping malls, are part of a plan to attract tourists into cities. Stations which have been or will be renovated include Grand Central station, New York, Penn Station, Baltimore, and Union Station, Washington. There is not expected to be a revival of rail travel, for financial reasons.
