TV's new generation emerges
Article Abstract:
Europe will probably agree to the US standard for high-definition television (HDTV) set by the alliance of communications firms, Philips and Thomson of France. The 1996 Atlanta Olympics may be the first commercial HDTV broadcast in the US. The US technology will be digital, which changes video into digital codes permitting multi-media communications. American broadcasting stations will have free channels to simulcast over a 15-year transition period. Changing the equipment will cost $15 billion-$20 billion.

Christmas is early on Wall Street
Article Abstract:
The US is expecting big tax increases in 1993 so Wall Street Christmas bonuses, normally paid in Jan or Feb 1993, may be paid in Dec 1992 to avoid higher tax rates. It is also advantageous to employers to pay out before President-elect Bill Clinton takes office as he promised to limit the tax deduction for companies. Profits have been outstanding in 1991/2 so annual pay rises are expected to increase.
