The door to peace is ajar. So who will dare to walk through?
Article Abstract:
The UK government believes that Sinn Fein, the political representatives of the IRA, could make a commitment to bringing about a settlement in Northern Ireland through purely political means. If this proves to be correct, then the negotiations due to start on Sep 9, 1997, could usher in a new era in Northern Irish politics. The success of the negotiations will depend on the stance of the Ulster Unionist party, which is currently considering whether to participate fully or only at a distance.

Seven generations of Kerrs have farmed in Fermanagh. Tonight the old man will cast his vote for traditional Unionism. But his son has other ideas
Article Abstract:
Some long-standing supporters of the Ulster Unionist party, such as Bertie Kerr, a farmer, councillor and member of the party executive, believe that the selection of a new leader should not be used as an opportunity to take the party in new directions. The party's five MPs tend towards this view too, feeling that it is the wrong time to take risks. However, younger people tend to favour innovation, believing that it is time to move away from the rhetoric associated with sectarianism.

Rebel ready to take Unionism by storm
Article Abstract:
Bob McCartney could well defeat the Ulster Unionist Party, the largest political grouping in Northern Ireland, in the by-election in the town of Bangor, County Down. He has little political experience, but is now the favourite to take the seat. If he does win, the Ulter Unionist Party could suffer a leadership crisis, having to look very closely at its future direction.
