The regions desert Madrid
Article Abstract:
The Spanish general election on Jun 06, 1993 is expected to create a hung parliament. The winning party will probably form a coalition with the Basque Country and/or Catalonia, giving more power to the regions. The armed forces note a lack of regional respect for the national flag. Galicia and Aragon seek more control over their own areas and there are regional campaigns against the Spanish language. Catalonia, Galacia and Andalucia have agreements with foreign governments, but a 1985 law makes this illegal.

Fading memories and rising right trouble Gonzalez
Article Abstract:
The Socialist Workers' Party in Spain (PSOE) won 46% of the vote in Oct, 1982, but by May 1993 the recession and corruption has reduced its seats from 210 to 175. Opinion polls conducted before the general elections on Jun 06, 1993 found 36% support, similar to that for the conservative Popular Party of Jose Maria Aznar. Prime Minister Felipe Gonzalez hopes to become president of the European Commission in 1995. Judge Baltasar Garzon, 37, is expected to become prime minister in that case.
