The good versus the bad and ugly
Article Abstract:
Many of the UK's quarrying and mining companies are involved in the Minerals 98 initiative, which aims to convince ordinary people and the government that they place strong emphasis on avoiding environmental damage. Almost 150 quarries and mines will open to the public, and there will also be four large conferences on successive days. Efforts will be made to emphasize that china clay, aggregates, iron ore, chalk, coal, salt, fuller's earth and potash play a significant role in the lives of ordinary people.

Quarrying in beauty spots to end
Article Abstract:
Tarmac, ARC and Aggregates Industries, three of the UK's five top quarrying concerns, are giving up their rights to quarry in nine sensitive sites in National Parks. They will not reopen currently dormant quarries where they have planning permission to do so. In two cases, they will not try to obtain an extension to permissions that are due to expire. Their decision has been welcomed by environmentalists, who believe that it will save many park landscapes from damaging development.

Moorland scarred by tracks for shooting
Article Abstract:
Some officials at the Northumberland National Park, England, fear that the area could be under threat from plans by housebuilder Persimmon Chmn Duncan Davidson to construct a network of tracks to connect his grouse moors. The officials believe that these tracks are not consistent with the park's purpose and that they could threaten its remoteness and tranquility. Some 14 km of tracks have already been built, two without proper notification.
