The guru and the Hard Rock hospital
Article Abstract:
Spiritual leader Sathya Sai Baba commissioned a hospital for the poor of the Indian state of Andrha Pradesh financed mainly by his devotee, American Isaac Tigrett, founder of the Hard Rock restaurant chain. He chose the design of Keith Critchlow, director of the Prince of Wales's Institute of Architecture. The hospital is built with decorated, reinforced concrete but uses traditional Vedic ideas of form, proportion and colour. Dr Anne Noble, the hospital architect, considers it a health care model. The hospital was completed in a year with a British team in charge for the first five months followed by a team led by Brigadier Bose, a structural engineer from Calcutta with the ECC Construction Company of Madras.

Guru in need of a C-change
Article Abstract:
Composer Terry Riley first became well known in 1964, when his 'In C' piece was performed at a concert at San Francisco's Tape Music Center. This piece is now seen as forming the basis for the minimalist movement in music. Riley moved on to solo improvisations on soprano saxophone in the late 1960s, while in the early 1970s his performances became more structured. However, 'In C' remains popular today, and has given Riley cult status.

One medieval market town: going, going, almost gone?
Article Abstract:
Although Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, England is in the London commuting area, it is one of the few remaining towns where the agricultural community still holds its market in the centre. The council chose developers Chartwell Land by competition. Auctioneers Simpson & Sons and Lacy Scott required the cattle market to remain but the developers plan shops, department stores, offices and parking on the 12 acre-site.
