The heat is on, in the world's warmest year
Article Abstract:
The average temperature in the world will rise by between 2.5 degrees C and 3 degrees C in the period to the end of the 21st century, according to the UK Meteorological Office's Hadley Centre. Global warming will accelerate the shrinkage of tropical forests, which will in turn increase the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and thus enhance global warming. Sea levels will gradually rise, making it necessary to invest extensively in coastal defences. Starvation will become more common as drought affects agriculture.

Why anger is the everyday story of country folk
Article Abstract:
There are indications of growing discontent among people who live in rural parts of the UK. They feel that they are being victimized and that their views are not being taken into account. Their feelings will be strongly expressed at a march planned to take place on Mar 1, 1998, in London, England. This event could attract very large numbers of people. The government is becoming aware of rural discontent, and has responded with a number of measures, including taxing development in the green belt.

Threat of global warming to grow faster
Article Abstract:
Scientists at the UK Meteorological Office have used a super-computer model to predict global warming rates. They have found that global warming is likely to speed up, with temperatures rising by an average of 1C by 2040 and rising further thereafter. These findings have prompted a panel of climate scientists which advises governments to call for urgent action to limit emissions which cause global warming.
