The triumph of the people's Diana
Article Abstract:
Media coverage which followed the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, tended to portray her as an icon or saint. This approach overlooks uncomfortable truths about her, and avoids looking at the real woman behind the carefully constructed public image. Journalists should be aware that her most significant role was that of the people's princess. She had the ability to communicate directly with ordinary people, and was unusual among public figures in being able to reach out and understand. For ordinary people, she was a warm, caring person, rather than a saint.

The tabloids take their slice of the pie
Article Abstract:
The UK's tabloid newspapers often showed a very disrespectful attitude towards Diana, Princess of Wales, when she was alive, especially in the way in which they intruded into all aspects of her life. In contrast, they seem very keen that great respect should be shown to her in death. They are producing supplements containing acceptable pictures of her, rather than intrusive ones, and seem to be conveniently overlooking their collective guilt.

What will they do without her?
Article Abstract:
Media owners and editors were very keen to obtain photographs of Diana, Princess of Wales. An edition containing a photograph of her could achieve a very strong rise in sales, and this is why her photograph was frequently used on front covers. Books about her also sold extremely well. Manufacturers of goods she was seen to use, such as Reebok trainers and Evian water, also derived great benefit from being associated with her.
