The hi-tech historian strikes again
Article Abstract:
The Inland Revenue headquarters in Nottingham, UK, designed by architect Sir Michael Hopkins, has recently been officially opened. Hopkins is already a highly respected architect, having won many awards, and has attracted attention by linking Modernist features with traditional materials. Some critics regard the high volume of his output as almost formulaic, and question the extent of his commitment to Modern architecture. His latest building has a red brick cladding, blending in well with its surroundings, and shows signs of his search to address issues of context, history and nature.

How green was my alley?
Article Abstract:
The first span of architect Piers Gough's Green Bridge at Mile End, London, England, is to be constructed shortly. The bridge's structure is quite lightweight, but it will be 25mt wide and have grass and trees on it. Gough has sought to make the bridge part of the string of linked parks being developed by the Mile End Park Partnership. For this reason, the bridge will have gently ramped paths for cyclists and pedestrians on both sides.

Sublime treasure where the spirit soars
Article Abstract:
Westminster Cathedral, designed by architect John Francis Bentley, is now celebrating its centenary. It was hailed as a masterpiece as soon as it was completed, and is still seen as a great achievement. It is admired for its timeless qualities, and has influenced many modern architects with its noble austerity. It has never been completed as Bentley intended, but has also not been changed much by later alterations.
