The joy of politics - a chance to upset the spin doctors
Article Abstract:
The 1998 elections to the UK Labour party's National Executive Committee (NEC) have become the subject of considerable controversy. In particular, it appears that the party establishment and a number of right-wing trade union leaders have been attempting to use their influence to take control of the new constituency section of the NEC. Prime Minister Tony Blair will have a very large majority on the new NEC in any case, and should therefore have the confidence to overrule those who are seeking to influence the outcome of the elections.

Old Labour is alive, well, and busy giving New Labour a kicking
Article Abstract:
The left wing of the UK Labour party remains a significant force. The key issue now is how party leaders will react to recent developments indicating the strength of the left wing. Some fundamentalists believe that the vote of the party membership is irrelevant, while another section of the party leadership recognizes that the constituency section election, as the only section of the National Executive Committee elected by secret ballot of the whole party membership, is the best indicator of what party members believe.

I'm amazed by all this vitriol pouring from the mouths of Labour politicians
Article Abstract:
The process for selecting the UK Labour party's candidate for Mayor of London, England, has become clouded in bitterness and misleading arguments. It is important that those involved in this process recognize that the Labour party's popularity in London results from its achievements there. An attack on these achievements brings the danger of alienating the party's core voters in London.
