To avoid another debacle, Labour must let Mr Livingstone stand
Article Abstract:
The UK Labour party is uncertain about whether it should prevent Ken Livingstone putting himself forward as a candidate for Mayor of London, England. In the past, the party would not have hesitated to block Livingstone, but it is now very sensitive about being seen as too controlling. The political climate has changed, and it can be argued that Prime Minister Tony Blair would be very misguided to prevent Livingstone becoming a candidate. The Labour party must show that it is firmly committed to politics in London, and this would not happen if it were to reject Livingstone.

Blair must stop Campbell and company spinning out of control
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair should be aware that his government is being damaged by the growing impression that it is more concerned with manipulating the media than with policies. It is undoubtedly necessary for top politicians to employ officials to deal with media relations, but Blair seems to have failed to understand that there has been a change of mood in the media. Spin doctors responsible for media relations have now become something of a liability, as there has been too great a gap between spin and actual fact.

Blair's equivocation on the euro may not be noble, but it is wise
Article Abstract:
UK Prime Minister Tony Blair is keeping open both the possibility of joining European monetary union and the possibility of not joining. This pragmatic approach can be regarded as Blair's only option in the light of the symbolic strengthening of Conservative opposition to European monetary union. It seems that both Blair and Chancellor Gordon Brown want the UK to join European monetary union, but Blair will continue to equivocate. Ultimately, the decision on whether to join will be determined by economics, not politics.
